The Owls (10-11, 3-3) have defeated the 49ers three years in a row, but will face a challenge in Charlotte as the 49ers are having a strong season at 16-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is coming off back-to-back wins over Richmond (61-48) and at UMass (66-54)...Sophomore Tyonna Williams led the Owls in both wins, scoring 17 points vs. Richmond and a career-high 23 points at UMass.
•The Owls had four players score in double figures vs. Richmond on Jan. 31, led by Williams with 17 points.
•Temple currently ranks first among all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.5 percent.
•Free throw shooting percentage is on the rise for the Owls, who have hit 82 percent from the line over their last three games (32-of-39)...Leading the way is Williams, who has made 25 of her last 27 attempts from the stripe.
•Prior to the victory over the Spiders, Temple had a rough go of it in A-10 games since winning its conference opener at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The Owls lost three straight league games, ending with a 71-55 loss to La Salle on Jan. 27.
•Temple played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Jan. 23, defeating Penn 59-51...The Owls' lead of 24 was enough to hold off a late rally by the Quakers and snap a two-game losing streak.
•Before this year, the Owls had not lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games since the 2002-03 season.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Senior Victoria Macaulay recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds at UMass.
•Macaulay blocked a career-high seven shots in the win at UMass on Feb. 3, tying for fourth all-time at Temple in a single game...She currently ranks 20th among all players in NCAA Division I with 2.38 blocks per game.
•Five of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records and strong RPI's, Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 18-3 and ranked 24th in the AP Poll Poll...Their only other losses came to #3/2 Connecticut and Villanova.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Charlotte is having a strong year at 16-4 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10...Since losing to Fordham in their A-10 opener on Jan. 13, the 49ers have won five straight including a 63-54 victory over Duquesne this past Sunday.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
The 49ers are having a strong year at 16-4 overall. Charlotte is 5-1 in the Atlantic 10, with the lone loss to Fordham being the only blemish on its record in the last nine games. The last five in a row have been wins for Charlotte, including a 63-54 victory over Duquesne this past Sunday, a team that was previously undefeated in the conference. Senior forward Jennifer Hailey leads the 49ers and is averaging a double-double of 16 ppg and 11.8 rpg, while senior forward Amanda Dowe is also averaging a double-double of 10.2 ppg and 10.8 rpg.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST CHARLOTTE
Temple is 7-2 all-time against Charlotte, and has won the last three straight including a 65-55 win in Philadelphia last season. The last time the Owls were in Charlotte, it was a nail-biter of a game that ended in a 60-57 win for Temple after the Owls had trailed by a point with five seconds remaining. In last year's game, Temple raced out to a 24-7 lead and held off the 49ers the rest of the way.
DOWNTOWN DEFENDERS
After being stingy on three-point defense all season, the Owls have recently taken it to a new level. They held Richmond to a single trey in 15 attempts on Jan. 31, and held UMass to 3-of-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc on Feb. 3. Temple is now ranked first in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.5 percent.
ACCEPTING CHARITY
Sophomore Tyonna Williams is shooting 75.7 percent from the free throw line this season, but has hit them at a 93 percent clip over Temple's last five games. She has missed only two free throws in that stretch, going 25-of-27. On her way to scoring a career-high 23 points in the win at UMass, she hit a career-high 8-of-9 at the line.
STARTERS GET IT DONE
Temple's bench had been key for a stretch of recent games, but in the last two games, both wins, it has been the starters' time to shine. All but four points have been scored by the Owls' five starters in the last two games combined. Four of them finished in double figures in a 61-48 win vs. Richmond on Jan. 31, and three did so in a 66-54 win vs. UMass on Feb. 3. Tyonna Williams led the way in both games with 17 points vs. Richmond and a career-high 23 at UMass. Rateska Brown scored 12 vs. Richmond and 21 at UMass, while Victoria Macaulay scored 12 points and 14 points, respectively. The five starters have also accounted for 84 of 87 rebounds, 16 of 19 steals and 33 of 34 assists.
SWEET REVENGE
The only blemish on Temple's A-10 slate last season was a loss to St. Bonaventure, and the Owls avenged that defeat with a win over the Bonnies in this year's A-10 opener. The 67-59 win was not an easy one, as Temple trailed by seven with six minutes left. The Owls closed the game on an impressive, 19-4 run to come away victorious and give head coach Tonya Cardoza the 100th win of her career.
WILLIAMS NAMED BIG 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After leading the Owls to a 2-0 week with wins against Richmond and at UMass, sophomore Tyonna Williams was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 4. She led Temple with 17 points in the Richmond win, and followed it up with a career-high 23 points at UMass.
MACAULAY DOUBLES UP NINE TIMES
Victoria Macaulay notched her ninth double-double of the season in Temple's win at UMass on Feb. 3, scoring 14 points and leading all players with 12 rebounds. She also recently recorded a double-doubles against La Salle (19 points, 15 rebounds) and in a win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13 (game-high 23 points, game-high 12 rebounds). Other highlights among her double-doubles include a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds at Kent St. on Dec. 6, a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds in a win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, and a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards in a win vs. Northeastern on Nov. 17.
HISTORY NOT REPEATING
After defeating the La Salle Explorers 14 straight times dating back to the 1999-2000 season, the Owls could not keep the streak alive as they suffered a 71-55 loss to La Salle on Jan. 27. Little went right for Temple throughout the game, and 27 turnovers led to a 28-8 edge for La Salle in points off turnovers. The Owls ran into an unstoppable force in La Salle's Shanel Harrison, who scored a career-high 29 points and came one shy of her program's record with eight steals.
CARDOZA WINS THE 100TH GAME OF HER CAREER
Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, which was against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year. Cardoza is now 103-49, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.5 ppg (6th), 9.4 rpg (5th), has a field-goal percentage of 46.2 (8th), has 2.4 blocks per game (3rd) and 7.2 def. rpg (2nd).
