PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Jared Martinelli was the center of attention Wednesday night at this year's Philadelphia Soccer Six banquet held at the Sheraton Hotel in Center City. During the gathering among the City's six Division I soccer schools, the organization honored the rookie midfielder six times during the awards ceremony for his accomplishments in 2012. Seniors Cody Calafiore and Billy Kappock were also slighted with recognition, as they were selected to the Soccer Six All-Star Team with Martinelli.
Martinelli, who was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year and to the league's All-Rookie Team, was named a member of the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie Team Wednesday and was singled out by being named the William “Bill” Wilkinson Freshman of the Year.
Before the night concluded, Martinell, a four-time Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week, was recognized for being the City's points leader with 28 on the year, which tied him for eighth all-time for most points in a single season by a Temple player.
He also tied Drexel junior Nathan Page with nine goals and his teammate Vaughn Spurrier with 10 assists—both Soccer Six highs.
In a season in which the Owls are playing their final year in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Martinelli not only is the last Owl to pick up the Rookie of the Year award, but the first since Chris Cotton was garnered with the honor in 1990.
Of those 28 points, 18 have come from his nine goals, which is the most for an Owl since 2003 and is the third-most by first-year player at Temple. Five of his goals have served as game-winners in half of the team's total wins.
Martinelli became the third player in Temple history to notch double figures in the assists category when he tallied his 10th in the Owls' A-10 Tournament berth victory at La Salle on Oct. 28.
Calafiore, a member of the 2011 Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star Team, retained his spot for 2012. This past season, Calafiore transitioned into more of a defensive midfielder for the Owls.
Ranking eighth in the A-10 with six assists, the Howell, N.J. native scored four goals, giving him 14 points, which was second-most on the team.
Making a major impact to the defense last season was Kappock, who played in every single game during his four-year carreer at Temple. Kappock is Temple's all-time leader in consecutive games started with 75.
