PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team fell to Atlantic 10 rival Richmond, 4-3, in a neutral site match that was held at the Levy Tennis Pavilion at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon. The Owls drop to 1-5 overall and 0-2 against league opponents.
With the match tied at 3-3, it came down to the fifth singles flight to determine the winner. Jordan Batey and Emily Gitman made every point count, but Gitman ultimately came out on top of a 3-6, 7-6(3), 13-11 decision to clinch the match.
The Cherry & White took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Batey and Alicia Doms teamed up at number one for an 8-6 win, and Rebecca Breland and Yana Mavrina partnered at the second flight to defeat their opponents, also by a score of 8-6.
Doms and Breland increased it to a 3-0 TU lead with their wins at the second and third flights, respectively. But that's when the Spiders turned things up, coming back to knot the score with wins at one, four and six, setting up the game-winning match at number five.
“This was a tough match today,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “All of the matches were tight and could have gone either way. We just didn't make the big shots needed to clinch the win. Hats off to a tough Richmond team for a great match.”
Temple is back in action on Wednesday, February 13, with an 11 a.m. match at Legacy against Georgetown.
