LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman Rachel Schwaab collected six total points with three goals and three assists in leading Temple lacrosse to a 12-7 win at USC (4-5) on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls (5-1) had five players score multiple goals, and broke open a 4-4 halftime tie with a 5-1 run to start the second half.
Avery Longstaff, Kellee Pace, Stephany Parcell and Charlotte Swavola all scored two goals apiece for Temple, with Parcell and Swavola also notching assists. Swavola added to her impressive numbers with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
After USC picked up the first draw of the game, Swavola caused a turnover which soon led to Pace's first goal of the game. Schwaab assisted on the goal, scored just one minute and three seconds into the action. The Trojans got two shots off on their next possession, but both were saved by Temple's Meghan Clothier.
The Owls cleared it and Schwaab picked up her second point of the day less than five minutes into the game with a goal to put Temple ahead 2-0.
Over the next 10 minutes, USC scored three unanswered goals to take the lead, 3-2, but the teams then traded goals the rest of the way. The Owls took advantage of a man-up situation with 10:38 remaining as Pace scored her second goal of the game to end USC's run and tie it up at 3-3.
The Trojans' Caroline de Lyra scored her second goal on a perfect pass from teammate Amanda Johansen with 7:20 remaining, but Temple would answer yet again.
From behind the net, Schwaab found an open Longstaff and recorded her second assist with five minutes left in the first half. The 4-4 tie stood through halftime, as the Owls' held the ball on their final possession but their last-second shot was saved by USC.
Schwaab wasted no time getting Temple the lead in the second half, taking a pass from Parcell just 45 seconds in and scoring her second goal of the day. The two reversed roles for the Owls' next goal, with Schwaab passing to Parcell for a 6-4 lead. Lea Britton crashed through a double team for Temple's third goal of the second half, putting the Owls ahead 7-4 at 23:49.
After USC got one back, Swavola scored twice in less than two minutes for Temple, the second coming in a man-up, free-position situation. The Trojans got within three with 17:58 remaining, but would come no closer.
Swavola passed to Parcell on crease roll for Parcell's second goal of the game, and it was soon followed by Schwaab's third goal for an 11-6 lead with 11:55 to go. Temple's final goal came with 6:14 remaining when Jaymie Tabor connected with Avery Longstaff for Longstaff's second goal of the contest. USC scored once more, and Clothier made a save on a free-position shot to preserve the lead at five goals.
The Owls have one game left on their California trip, and will travel to San Diego State for a 3:00 p.m. (EST) game on Saturday, March 16.
