Women's Tennis Picks Up 5-2 Win at Duquesne

HARMAR, Pa. – With wins at four of six singles matches, and two of three doubles, the Temple women's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a 5-2 victory over Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne on Wednesday evening. The Owls improve to 5-7 overall while the Dukes fall to 4-6.
Duqesne started strong, winning at first doubles, 8-0. But it was all TU from there as Rebecca Breland and Yana Mavrina teamed up to win 8-5 at No. 3, before Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms secured the point with an 8-5 decision at the second flight.
The Dukes knotted the score at 1-1 with a win at the fifth flight to start singles play. Batey responded with a 7-6(5), 6-2 decision at No. 4, and Minami Okajima and Breland followed with wins at six and three, respectively, to guarantee the match victory.
Okajima was a three-set winner over Laurence Lambert, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1, while Breland pulled off a come from behind three-set win against Sarah Shashura, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Also winning was Mavrina with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(2) decision at No. 2.
Temple will be back in action on Friday, March 15, with a 7 p.m. match at Xavier.
