Owls Dominate at Stetson Sprints

3.15.13 | Men's Crew, Women's Rowing

Temple Mens Crew and Womens Rowing teams opened the Spring 2013 season yesterday in Deland, Fla. at the Stetson Sprints. Stetson University hosted the event featuring the Owls and three other universities.

Getting the Owls off to a great start the Men's Varsity 8, comprised of Nick Palastro (coxswain), Alex McCaig (stroke), Charles Anderson (seat-7), Fergal Barry (seat-6), Gary Wielgus (seat-5), Michael Mirabella (seat-4), Kevin Nally (seat-3), Tom Robbins (seat-2) and Pat Woodruff (bow), took the Gold in the second and third races of the day with times of 6:56 and 6:44, respectively.

The Men finished second, only to Jacksonville University, in the Mens Varsity V 4+. The Owls boat was comprised of Matt Ciarella (coxswain), Conor Murphy (seat-4), Trey Ehmer (seat-3), Zephyr Dippel (seat-2) and Josh Kuzo (bow).

The the Junior Varsity 8 Boat was led by Mat Sbei. The boat was comprised of Conor Murphy (stroke), Trey Ehmer (seat-7), Mike Pelligrini (seat-6), Dan Sipzner (seat-5), Brian Reifsnyder (seat-4), Evan Hammond (seat-3), Bryan Berry (seat-2) and Jush Kuzo (bow).
 
Womens rowing Head Coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski was excited for what her team had to gain from the sprints.

“The past week has been fantastic.  Training trips are great for mixing up the routine and eliminating some of the daily distractions that exist during the majority of the year.  We have seen some serious progress from everyone over the past week and we are really excited to put our training to the test.”

The Lady Owls did not let their coach down, taking gold in all four women's events.

In the first women's race of the day the Varsity 8 C Boat comprised of Julia Wolanski (coxswain), Grace Kroner (seat-8), Kathy Bostion (seat-7)m Stephanie Barber (seat-6),  Emily nd (seat-5), Elizabeth Clark (seat-4), Amanda Benton (seat-3),  Emily Hedrick (seat-2) and Stephanie Pennypacker (bow), finished ahead of the competition with times of 8:57 and 9:09 in both races.

Varsity 8 B boat comprised of Erin Matz (coxswain), Victoria Joye ( seat-8), Angela Flinn (seat-7), Allison Watkins (seat-6), Kara Carson (seat-5),  Annie Buckley (seat-4), Calista Diguardia (seat-3),  Megan Boyer (seat 2) and Lauren Kidd (bow), finished both races at 8:40 and below.

The Varsity 8 A boat, featuring Eleanor Oken/ Kelsey Franks (coxswain), Paige O' Sullivan (seat-8), Jackie Lees (seat-7) , Joanna Sutor (seat-6), Jeanine Lees (seat-5), Moira Meeks (seat-4), Claudia Loeber (seat-3), Brittany Adell (seat-2) and Emily Opperman (bow), finished the Varsity 8 races in first with a time of 8:04  in the first race and a 7:52 time in the second.

The Women's Varsity 4 boat, comprised of Katie Cardwell (coxswain), Blair Bradley (seat-4), Sarah Barber (seat-3), Lily Papaleo (seat-2) and Susan O'Neil Coyne (bow), finished the day in first place with a time of 9:18 over Stetson and Jacksonville University.
