Women's Gymnastics Sends Eight Qualifiers To USAG National Championships

PHILADELPHIA—Eight members of the Temple women's gymnastics team have qualified for the USA Gymnastics National Championship, giving them the opportunity to extend their season. The Owls' entire beam lineup along with two other individuals have qualified for 2013 event held at Centenary College April 12-14.
Helping the Owls to their season-best team score at the ECAC Championship last Saturday, Heather Zaniewski, Brittanie DeMeno, Sylvie Borschel, Taylor Rakus, Alexis Arena and Jean Alban will all take part on the beam at nationals. Temple's beam lineup registered its season-high score at Ursinus back on Feb, 10 when it totaled a 48.65
Alban will be competing as an all-arounder for the Owls. The two-time ECAC Gymnast of the Week set her career-high with a 38.650 through the four events and had her best mark of the season on the beam, scoring a 9.775.
Arena, Zaniewski and Stephanie Verry will all compete in multiple events. In addition to beam, Arena will take part on the vault, where she holds a career-high score of 9.625, which came this season. Arena is also TU's top performer on beam this season, as she earned a career-high mark of 9.825 earlier this season. Verry, who is the Owls' leading performer on floor this season will also compete on vault, where she scored as high as a 9.75 this season. Verry posted her career-high score in the floor exercise as well, earning an impressive 9.85 for her routine.
Sophomore Lauren Capone, who is coming off her 9.8 score in the floor exericse at ECAC's, will go to nationals to compete on vault. Capone hit her career-high score in the event in the Ken Anderson Invitational when she was tabbed with a 9.7.
