NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Temple women's tennis team has received the ninth seed at the 30th annual Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on April 18-21 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The Owls will face #8 Saint Louis at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
TU has posted a 9-13 record through the regular-season this spring. The Cherry & White ended the year winning four of their last five matches, including a 5-2 win over conference foe Saint Joseph's. Temple has not faced Saint Louis since the 2010-11 season when the squad dropped a 4-3 decision to the Billikens in the second round of the A-10 tournament.
Junior Jordan Batey and sophomore Rebecca Breland are part of the young group that has ninth-seeded Temple poised to make a run at its fifth crown in program history and first since 2008. Both players have identical 16-8 singles records. Batey has gone 12-6 in dual matches with a 5-3 record against conference opponents, while Breland is 14-6 in duals with a 6-2 mark in A-10 play.
Also boasting a winning record in singles play is junior team co-captain Alicia Doms. With a 13-11 overall record, 12-8 in duals and 5-3 against A-10 foes, Doms has been a versatile player for the Owls, playing anywhere from the first flight to the fourth. The lefty has gone 6-5 at No. 1.
Breland and junior team co-captain Yana Mavrina lead the team in doubles play with an 11-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark against conference opponents. Also reaching double figures in wins are the pair of Batey and Doms who are 10-10 overall and 4-3 in A-10 play. The duo has been most successful at No. 2 with a 5-2 record.
Conference newcomer Virginia Commonwealth is the top seed at the event, coming in winners of nine straight and 11 of its last 12. The Rams are vying for their second-straight, 14th overall, trip to the NCAA tournament after leaving the Colonial Athletic Association on a high note last year with a conference title. Ranked 38th in the latest ITA poll, VCU will face 16th-seeded La Salle in the opening round on Thursday.
Following VCU, the seeds are Xavier (second), Massachusetts (third), Richmond (fourth), Charlotte (fifth), George Washington (sixth), Fordham (seventh), Saint Louis (eighth), Temple (ninth), Duquesne (10th), Saint Joseph's (11th), Rhode Island (12th), Butler (13th), Dayton (14th), St. Bonaventure (15th) and La Salle (16th).
