Softball Pounds Out 19 Hits in 13-4 Win at Iona; Lucas Goes 4-for-4
4.30.13 | Softball
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Owls went about it differently than they had been the past few games - powering past teams with homeruns - to get a 13-4 victory at Iona using just three extra-bases hits in a season-high 19 to come away with the win. Temple improves to 27-22 overall, while the Gaels fall to 12-35.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cherry & White went to work in the top of the second, scoring five times on three hits. Iona pitcher Jordan Courage loaded the bases by hitting the first three batters. After a fly out, Annie Marcopolus sent a single to left centerfield to drive in the first two runs of the game. One out later with runners on second and third, Sarah Prezioso singled to left field to score both. Stephanie Pasquale finished out the scoring with an RBI single to right field to bring Prezioso around.
The Gaels got one back in the bottom half of the frame to cut it to 5-1. Sydney Dimon walked to open the inning before a fielder's choice put Brianna King on first with one out. With Cari Anderson at the plate, King advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball and then home on Anderson's single to second.
The Owls put two more on the board in the third when Ali Robinson delivered a two-out single up the middle that scored Julia Kastner and Kayla Cook. Kastner had reached on a fielder's choice and Cook on a single earlier in the frame.
After both teams went scoreless over the next two innings, TU added some more separation with a four run sixth inning. Robinson led off with a double before Pasquale drove her in with a single up the middle. Kelsey Dominik then stepped in and belted her 12th homerun of the year to bring in two more. Leah Lucas followed immediately with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Liz Bauer pinch hit for Cook and got the first hit of her career with an RBI single to right field to make it 11-1.
Temple pitcher Brooklin White had scattered just three hits over the first five innings. The Gaels really got to the right hander in the sixth, however, tagging her for five hits and three runs, all coming on a Katie Jansson homer to left centerfield.
With the host team avoiding the mercy-rule loss and extending the game to the seventh, the Owls added two insurance runs to make up the final score of 13-4. After two quick outs to open it, Prezioso walked and stole second, in the process tying the Temple single-season record. Pasquale then collected her third hit and RBI of the game with a single to right field. Dominik and Lucas followed with back-to-back singles, the latter scoring Pasquale, to plate the second run of the inning.
Iona put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a TU error, but White got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game and pick up the win.
White (5-7) tossed her fifth complete game of the season, allowing eight hits and four runs, only three earned. She walked three and struck out one. Courage (1-10) took the complete-game loss, giving up 19 hits and 13 runs, walking one and fanning two.
Lucas finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Robinson and Pasquale each went 3-for-5. Robinson had a double and two runs batted in, while Pasquale drove in three runs.
Temple, which matched its win total from a year ago with the victory, hosts Delaware State Wednesday afternoon for its final non-conference game of the year. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
