PHILADELPHIA – Fourteen-year head coach David MacWilliams and the Temple men's soccer team have announced their 2013 schedule, including their inaugural American Athletic Conference slate. After a pair of home exhibition matches against Lafayette (Aug. 20) and Iona (Aug. 24), the Cherry and White will officially kick off the season Aug. 30 against Saint Peter's with a 4:00 p.m. match in North Jersey. When the Owls go up against the Peacocks in their season opener, MacWilliams will be going for the 100th win of his head coaching career at Temple. On September 28, 2013, Temple will head to Kentucky for a historical moment in its 88-year history of the program, as it will make its debut in American Athletic Conference play against 2012 NCAA Quarterfinalist Louisville.
“Once again we have a tough schedule, especially in the new American Athletic Conference, but we are very excited to go up and face the challenges that await us,” MacWilliams said. “I think we also have a quality out of conference schedule, so I'm looking forward to the upcoming season and I know our guys are excited and are eager to get back to begin training for this big year ahead.”
When the Owls return to the Ambler Sports Complex after facing Saint Peter's, they will open the home portion of their campaign with the Temple/Saint Joseph's Tournament, beginning on Sept. 6 against Wofford. The home-opening weekend tournament will conclude with a match against Hofstra two days later (Sept. 8) and the Owls will close out the three-game homestand when they welcome Rider for their first midweek game of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
The highlight to Temple's home schedule will come on Oct. 2 when it hosts its first American Athletic Conference game against Connecticut, who like Louisville reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2012. The Owls will also host South Florida (Oct. 13), Memphis (Oct.19) and Cincinnati (Nov. 2) in conference play.
Before opening league play against Louisville, the Owls will host former A-10 rival Fordham in their final non-conference home match on Sept. 25.
The Owls will venture to Southern Methodist (Oct. 9), Rutgers (Oct. 23) and Central Florida (Oct. 27) for their other three American Athletic Conference games.
Temple will play its pair of Philadelphia Soccer Six contests against former Atlantic 10 Conference travel partner Saint Joseph's at Finnesey Field on Sept. 14 and at home against Villanova on Sept. 21.
The Owls will also go head-to-head against city-rival Drexel at the Vidas Athletic Complex (Oct. 5) after visiting the University of Delaware for an evening contest on Sept. 17.
The American Athletic Conference Tournament will be played over two weekends, beginning with the First Round games on Nov. 8 and the Quarterfinals Nov. 9. The Semifinals and the Final will take place on Nov. 15 and Nov. 17, respectively, at a site yet to be announced.
Temple is coming off a 10-6-3 season in 2012, including its third straight trip to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. MacWilliams will return 19 of his players from a year ago, while welcoming 11 newcomers.

The 2013 season will bring challenging competition that Temple has never faced before. The Owls will go up against eight clubs (Wofford, Louisville, Connecticut, Southern Methodist, South Florida, Memphis, Central Florida and Cincinnati) for the first time ever and will face four NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago in their first four American Athletic Conference games (Louisville, Connecticut, Southern Methodist and South Florida). Working in the Owls' favor, they will travel out of the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware tri-state area only three times during the course of the season.
