Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA – The six-team field has been set for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, which begins Wednesday at the University of Massachusetts' Elaine Sortino Field. Saint Joseph's has captured the top seed and receives one of two first-round byes for the double-elimination championship. Temple is the third seed for the second year in a row.
Temple has faced every team in this year's tournament, going 4-6 against the field. TU split with every team except Saint Louis. Earlier this year, the Owls defeated Dayton 12-7 before falling 2-0. Against Saint Joseph's, TU dropped a 14-5 decision before rebounding with a 10-1 victory. The George Washington and Fordham games were just this past weekend. Against the Colonials, TU fell 5-3 before defeating the squad 10-8. On Sunday, the Owls won a 2-1 decision and dropped a 13-7 game against the Rams. Saint Louis is the only team in the field to get the best of the Cherry & White, knocking them off 3-2 and 11-3.
TU comes into the tournament having won eight of its final 10 games of the regular season. With a 30-24 record, the 2013 version of the Owls have become just the fourth team in the 39-year history of TU's softball program to reach that win total. The 2004 team was the last team to win 30 games.
Juniors Stephanie Pasquale and Sarah Prezioso lead the squad and the conference with .462 and .436 averages, respectively. Pasquale has set a Temple and Atlantic 10 single-season record for RBI this year with 74, and currently leads the country with 1.37 per game. The catcher is also the toughest player in the nation to strikeout, doing so only three times in 173 at bats. Prezioso established her own school and conference record, scoring 61 runs this season, good for 11th in the country with a 1.13 average.
On the mound, freshman Kelsey Dominik paces the Owls with a 14-6 record. Her 3.94 ERA leads the team, and she has completed 14 of the 18 games she has started. In addition to her performance in the circle, Dominik is also the top freshman with a .300 batting average, clubbing 14 homeruns, which is tied with Pasquale, Prezioso and senior Ali Robinson for a TU single-season record.
SJU, which finished with a conference record of 17-5 and an overall mark of 34-8-1, claimed the regular-season crown with a doubleheader sweep of George Washington on Sunday. Fordham and Temple tied for the second seed with league records of 15-7. Fordham (32-20 overall) received the second seed and the other first round bye due to the league's tiebreaker policy. The Rams' regular-season sweep over fourth-seeded George Washington was the deciding tiebreaker. Temple split the regular season series with GW and will be the third seed. The Colonials clinched the fourth seed with a 13-7 conference record and are 26-21 overall.
Saint Louis is the fifth seed for the championship with an A-10 record of 13-9 and a 26-21 overall mark. Dayton, 22-22 overall, secured the final spot with a 12-9 conference mark, earning the sixth seed.
No. 4 George Washington will face No. 5 Saint Louis in the first game of the championship Wednesday at noon. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Saint Joseph's at noon on Thursday. Third-seeded Temple plays No. 6 Dayton at 2:30 pm Wednesday. The winner of that game advances to face second-seeded Fordham at 2:30 pm Thursday. The losers of the first two games will fall into the consolation bracket and play each other Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
The championship final, which will determine the recipient of the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Championship, will be played Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. All rounds of the event will be streamed live for free on Atlantic10.com.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for youth and seniors and free for Atlantic 10 Conference institution students with a valid ID. There are special rates available for groups and for multi-day passes.
