PHILADELPHIA – Both the defending national champion UConn Huskies and the national runner-up Louisville Cardinals are on the slate twice for Temple women's basketball in 2013-14 as the Owls prepare for an extremely challenging schedule in the American Athletic Conference. In all, Temple will play 12 of 29 games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season.
"Obviously, this is our most challenging schedule in the history of the program," said sixth-year Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza, "and this is what you want- to play against the best and get this kind of exposure for Temple women's basketball. We are so excited to get started and to see what this season will bring. This schedule gives us the opportunity to bring in some terrific competition and to put people in the stands."
The non-conference portion of the schedule will be no less difficult, as it has the Owls playing six NCAA Tournament teams out of 11 total games.
The Owls will play each of the nine other American teams twice, both home and away, for a total of 18 games. The schedule for those contests is not yet set, but the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament is set for March 7-10 in Uncasville, Conn., at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Connecticut tournament site will be a homecoming of sorts for Cardoza, who spent 14 years as an assistant coach at UConn.
"I'm excited," said Cardoza, "and I was hoping that's where the tournament would be. It's a great arena and one of my favorite places. I know the Connecticut fans will come out to support the tournament, and having the games at a neutral site will be a great experience for the student-athletes."
Temple opens the season with two road games close to home as they face Philadelphia Big 5 opponent La Salle on Nov. 8 and 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 team Delaware on Nov. 12. The Owls will play Auburn in their home opener on Nov. 16 before closing out the month with home games against Michigan State and Oakland. Michigan State is returning a visit from the Owls last season, and the Spartans are a formidable foe after going 25-9 and advancing to the NCAA Second Round in 2012-13.
The month of December opens with a home contest against 2013 Atlantic 10 champ Saint Joseph's, now only a Big 5 opponent for the Owls. Temple will then hit the road for two more games against postseason teams from a year ago- Montana and Syracuse.
On Dec. 19 the Owls return home to face Howard, and they close out the month with another Big 5 game against Villanova at home on Dec. 22. The Big 5 season will be complete for Temple on Jan. 22 with a home contest against Penn.
Along with Connecticut and Louisville, the lineup for American games includes 2013 NCAA Second Round team South Florida as well as two WNIT teams from a year ago in Memphis and SMU. Temple will face traditional rival Rutgers as a conference opponent for the first time since the Scarlet Knights left the Atlantic 10 in 1995, but the league rivalry will last only one year before Rutgers moves to the Big 10.
Six teams in the American will be first-time opponents for Temple- Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, SMU and USF. With the exception of Rutgers, the Owls' combined record against their new conference opponents is 3-2 (3-1 vs. Connecticut and 0-1 vs. UCF).
