Former Male Fencer Larry Anastasi To Be Inducted Into USA Fencing Hall of Fame On Saturday
6.27.13 | General, Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA – Larry Anastasi, a two-time US Olympian and former male fencer at Temple University from 1956-57 will be enshrined in the USA Fencing Hall of Fame Saturday evening during an induction ceremony being held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center out in Ohio.
“I am truly honored and I appreciate the recognition from the USA Fencing Hall of Fame committee,” Anastasi said. “Temple is where I got my start in the sport and I have always carried fond memories of fencing there. It was quite an experience.”
A native of Haverford, Pa., Anastasi majored in Pre-Law at Temple from 1954-57. In 1956 after the men's fencing coach passed away, Anastasi began training in epee under newly hired head coach Fred Pierce. Anastasi, who never fenced prior to his junior year proved to be an asset to the team, as he and his fellow Owl teammates went on to qualify for the Collegiate Nationals, where they placed 13th.
Following his one-year career at Temple, Anastasi began fencing for the Salle Csiszar team in Philadelphia, where he stretched his skill set by learning to fence in foil before going on to have an extraordinary amateur career. The two-weapon fencer, who is particularly known for his classical and sportsmanlike behavior in the heat of competition, went on to win US National Championships as a foilist in 1961 and as an epeeist in 1963. To date, Anastasi is one of only three living fencers to win titles in two weapons.
A member of the 1963 Pan American Team, he helped the foil and epee squads claim gold medals, while taking a fourth place finish in epee as an individual. The next year, Anastasi reached the pinnacle of his career, making the US Olympic team at the 1964 games held in Tokyo and then in 1968 at Mexico City.
The USA Fencing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on June 29 in Room D130 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Anastasi will be inducted along with: Cliff Bayer, Hans Halberstadt, Buckie Leach, Leonardo Terrone and Iris Zimmermann.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the door for $20. The ceremony will be preceded by a cash bar reception at 5 p.m. Appetizers will be served at 5:30 p.m.
