PURCHASE, N.Y. —Temple University will be represented at the Merion Golf Club as former Owl great Geoff Sisk ('87) tied for first in the US Open Sectional Qualifier held at the Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, N.Y. Monday. Unfortunately freshman Brandon Matthews was edged out for the final of four spots despite carding a four-under 67 in the final of two rounds.
Sisk, a four-time honorable mention All-American, shot a 68 in the opening round and finished the day with a 69 for a four-under 137. This will be his seventh appearance in a US Open. Since turning pro in 1988, Sisk has played in 40 PGA Tour events including six U.S. Opens, most recently in 2011 (1995, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011). His best U.S. Open finish came in 1999 at Pinehurst when he finished tied for 30th.
Matthews, who had a stellar freshman season for the Cherry and White, shot a two-over 72 in his opening round before rebounding with a four-under 67. The DuPont, Pa. native was tied for the final spot when he completed his second round, but fellow amateur Gavin Hill birdied the final two holes to pass Matthews and tie Sisk and Jesse Smith for first. Jim Herman earned the final slot with a three-under 138.
The Owl rookie had placed second in the 2013 A-10 Championship to earn All-Conference honors and winning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. He was also won three tournaments and was named to the PING All-Northeast Region team.
