Brandon Matthews Wins 109th Open Championship

PAOLI, PA - Temple sophomore Brandon Matthews defeated Golf Galaxy CC professional Billy Stewart by two strokes in a four-hole playoff to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 109th Open Championship Wednesday afternoon at Waynesborough Country Club. Matthews, who birdied the 18th hole on the second and final round of play, carded a two-under 140 for the event.
It marks the third straight year a Temple golfer has won the event,. Andrew Mason, who played for the Owls from 2007 through 2011, won the Open Championship in 2011 and 2012.
Matthews, who had a stellar freshman season for the Cherry and White, has had a great summer of golf. He tied for first at the US Open sectional qualifier and was an alternate for the 2013 US Open.
The Dupont, Pa. native was coming off a rookie season at Temple where he placed second in the 2013 A-10 Championship, earning All-Conference honors and Rookie of the Year honors. He also won three tournaments and was named to the PING All-Northeast Region team.
