PHILADELPHIA - There has been only one thing hotter than the oppressive heat wave that has hovered over the Delaware Valley of late - Temple golfer Brandon Matthews.
Matthews, who enters his sophomore year at Temple in the fall, won the U.S. Amateur Qualifying round held Monday at both the Overbook Golf Club and the Radnor Country Club, finishing the day with a four-under-par 136. The Owl golf carded 11 birdies on the day. He started with a 67 at Overbrook, the best round among the field of 131, and ended with a 69 at Radnor.
"I've been playing a lot of golf and I thought I might be a little tired," Matthews said to the Philadelphia Inquirer after the event. "But I played great in the morning. I missed a few putts here and there, but all I wanted to do was make it. Not only did I want to get there, but I want to make it to match play. What happens from there, I'm going to make my own destiny."
The win is less than a week removed from his impressive victory at the Philadelphia Golf Association Open Championship, where he won the 36-hole event in a four-hole playoff. He also served as an alternate at the U.S. Open Championship held at Merion Golf Club, after shooting a four-under-par 67 in the final round of a sectional qualifier. He had qualified for the Sectional by sinking a birdie putt on the 18th for a round of 76 to place himself in a three-way tie for low score of the day in a local qualifier at the Country Club of SC in Clark Summit, Pa.
During his rookie season at Temple, the DuPont, Pa. native had placed second in the 2013 A-10 Championship to earn All-Conference honors and winning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. He was also won three tournaments and was named to the PING All-Northeast Region team.
