Matthews Cards 69 in Day One at U.S. Amateur Championship

BROOKLINE, MA - Temple sophomore golfer Brandon Matthews carded a one-under 69 on the first day of the U.S. Amateur Championship Monday morning at the Charles River Country Club.

The DuPont, Pa. native is currently tied for 12th among the field of 315 competitors with the Top 64 advancing to match play after tomorrow's second round of stroke play. Matthews, who has won three tournaments this summer including this weekend's Patterson Cup, will tee off Tuesday at 12:55 p.m at the tournament's host course, The Country Club.

The U.S. Amateur was established in 1895 and its list of past winners includes many of the sport's legends - Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods.

It is a test of endurance, a minimum of 144 holes over a seven-day period on two difficult courses.
