Brandon Matthews Advances to Quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Temple sophomore golfer Brandon Matthews has advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship. To reach the quarterfinals, Matthews defeated Matt Pinizzotto 1-up on Wednesday before defeating Gavin Green 4 & 3 and Charlie Danielson 3 & 2 on Thursday.
Matthews will play Oliver Goss of Australia in a quarterfinals match beginning at noon on Friday, Aug. 16. Goss is a freshman at the University of Texas.
The Dupont, Pa., native came from two strokes down with four holes to play against Pinizzotto in the Round of 64, rallying to win three of the last four holes for the 1-up victory. Matthews handedly beat Green of Malaysia in the Round of 32 and Danielson in the Round of 16.
The U.S. Amateur Championship was established in 1895 and its list of past winners includes many of the sport's legends - Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The tournament is played at Charles River Country Club and The Country Club.
