Brandon Matthews' Incredible Run Comes to an End at U.S. Amateur Golf Championship

BROOKLINE, Mass. - After an incredible run that took him all the way to the quarterfinals of the 2013 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, Temple sophomore Brandon Matthews was defeated 5 & 3 by Australia's Oliver Goss on Friday. By advancing to the quarterfinals, Matthews automatically qualified for the 2014 U.S. Amateur.

To reach the quarterfinals, Matthews had defeated Matt Pinizzotto 1-up on Wednesday before defeating Gavin Green 4 & 3 and Charlie Danielson 3 & 2 on Thursday. Matthews' quarterfinal opponent, Goss, is a freshman at the University of Texas.

Matthews came from two strokes down with four holes to play against Pinizzotto in the Round of 64, rallying to win three of the last four holes for the 1-up victory. He handedly beat Green of Malaysia in the Round of 32 and Danielson in the Round of 16.

Coming into the tournament, Matthews had won the 111th Patterson cup on August 9, and a week prior to that he had placed second at the PA Amateur Championship. Earlier in the summer he posted wins at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier and the Philadelphia Golf Association Open Championship, where he captured the 36-hole event in a four-hole playoff. Matthews also served as an alternate at the U.S. Open Championship held at Merion Golf Club, after shooting a four-under-par 67 in the final round of a sectional qualifier.

The U.S. Amateur Championship was established in 1895 and its list of past winners includes many of the sport's legends - Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The tournament is played at Charles River Country Club and The Country Club.
