Jared Martinelli Named Preseason All-Conference by The American

8.22.13 | Men's Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Temple sophomore midfielder Jared Martinelli has been named Preseason All-Conference by the American Athletic Conference. Martinelli was one of 13 players selected to the league's preseason squad. Balloting was done by the league's nine head coaches, with coaches not permitted to vote for their own players.

As a freshman, Martinelli was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year. He was also named the William “Bill” Wilkinson Freshman of the Year and earned selection to the A-10's All-Rookie Team and the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-League Team.

Martinelli led the Owls with 28 points last year, which tied him for eighth all-time on the Temple single-season points list. Of those 28 points, 18 came from his nine goals, which is the most for an Owl since 2003, and is the third-most by a first-year player at Temple. Five of his goals served as game-winners, leading to half of the team's total wins. Martinelli became the third player in Temple history to notch double figures in the assists category when he tallied his 10th in the Owls' victory at La Salle on Oct. 28.

Temple will have an uphill battle in its first year in the power American Athletic Conference, as the Owls were picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll. Three teams in the league (UConn, Louisville and USF) played in the NCAA Tournament last year, with UConn and Louisville each advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals and finishing the season ranked in the Top 10 by the NSCAA.

The coaches selected UConn to win the league, and the Huskies' Andre Blake was named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year while teammate Mamadou Doudou Diouf was selected Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. USF's Ben Sweat was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The Owls have an exhibition contest on Saturday, Aug. 24 at home against Iona, before opening the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, against Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J.

The 2013 home opener is Friday, Sept. 6, when Temple hosts Wofford at 4:00 p.m. in the Temple/Saint Joseph's Tournament.  Temple and Saint Joseph's will each play Wofford and Hofstra on their home fields, with Hofstra playing the Owls at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.
