Men's Soccer Opens the 2013 Season with a Victory to Give Head Coach David MacWilliams his 100th Win

8.30.13 | Men's Soccer

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Temple men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 victory at Saint Peter's in overtime, Friday afternoon. With the win, 14-year head coach David MacWilliams now has 100 wins on his coaching resume with Temple. He joins three other Temple coaches at the 100 win plateau.

"This was a tough game for us," MacWilliams said. "Both team had their opportunities in this game. We couldn't finish in regulation. Our defense played well when we needed it to. We showed a lot of character in this game to earn the win."

After playing two halves that had no scoring, Jared Martinelli quickly changed that with a goal less than four minutes in overtime. Vaughn Spurrier assisted on the goal. This is a familiar sight for the Owls. Martinelli led the team last year with nine goals and Spurrier was tied with Martinelli with 10 assists.

"Jared Martinelli finished off the pass from Vaughn Spurrier very well," MacWilliams said. "He stepped up when we needed him most."

Junior Dan Scheck earned the win in goal for Temple. He made five saves on the Peacocks' 11 shots for the shutout.
The Owls had 14 total shots with eight on goal.

Five newcomers made their debuts for the Owls. Redshirt Sophomore Jonah Williams came in as a substitute after redshirting last year. Freshmen Robert Sagel and Stefan Mueller both started in their collegiate debut, while fellow freshmen Donovan Fraser and Matt Mahoney made their debuts off the bench.

The game was a homecoming for assistant coach Brian Clarhaut. He played for the Peacocks from 2004-06 where he was a member of the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Academic Team.

Next up for the team is their home opener on Friday, Sept 6 at 4:00 p.m. They will be playing Wofford in the Temple/ Saint Joseph's Tournament.
