PHILADELPHIA – Tamara Burns has joined the Temple Athletics staff as an assistant men's and women's track & field coach, as announced on Monday by Eric Mobley, the head coach for men's and women's track & field and cross country. Burns, who spent the past six years as an assistant coach at St. Francis (PA), will serve as the throws coach for the team as the Owls embark on their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference.
“I'm very excited to welcome Tamara to our program,” said Mobley. “She brings a lot of experience and consistency, and she also competed at the very highest level at NCAA's as an athlete. Tamara will help us achieve the stability that we need in our throws program in order to reach our goals.”
Burns worked with the throwers at St. Francis as well, guiding them to many impressive achievements in her six years with the program. Under her guidance, Christin Bridge won eight individual Northeast Conference championships, including three outdoor shot put and discus titles. Bridge was a recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award in 2011 and won the 2012 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet award in her senior season.
Also under the guidance of Burns, Kate Kendrick earned a 2011 NEC Outdoor Championship in the discus. Kendrick recorded career-highs in the shot put (13.00m) and discus (40.29m) in 2012. Kayla Herron became the SFU record holder in the weight throw in 2008 (18.59m), and she won the NEC Championship in the weight throw in '08 as well. Herron also won the NEC Outdoor Championship in the hammer throw in '08.
On the men's side, Terry Bookhammer registered personal-bests in the shot put (13.71m), discus (41.75m) and hammer throw (52.12m) in 2012. Bookhammer finished fifth in the NEC in the hammer throw and qualified for the IC4A Indoor Qualifier.
Karl Dewyngaert earned a 2009 NEC Indoor Championship in the weight throw. Ben Madeira placed second at the NEC Championship in 2009 in the discus and also earned a second-place finish in the shot put (16.57m).
Prior to her arrival at St. Francis, Burns had a standout four-year career at Virginia Tech. While competing for the Hokies, Burns earned both All-American and All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for her performances in the weight and hammer throws in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, she claimed the weight throw title at the ACC Indoor Championships and went on to win the hammer throw at the 2007 ACC Outdoor Championships. Burns' performances helped the Hokies to capture the 2007 Indoor and Outdoor ACC Championships. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor's degree in human development in 2007.
