Brandon Matthews Cards Record 65 to Win 111th Patterson Cup

8.9.13 | Men's Golf

BLUE BELL, PA - Temple University golfer Brandon Matthews shot a seven-under 65 on the final day of competition to win the 111th Patterson Cup Friday afternoon, Matthews, who also won the 2012 Patterson Cup, turned in a remarkable final round that equaled the Cedarbrook Country Club competitive course record and led him to a five-shot victory over his Owls teammate Matt Teesdale.

Matthews became the first player in Golf Association of Philadelphia history to win both the Patterson Cup and Silver Cross in successive seasons. Both have run concurrently since 1902. Matthews is also the only player to win the Open Championship (which started in 1903), Patterson and Silver Cross in the same year.

"That's pretty cool because there are a lot of very good players that have come through here, Jay Sigel, Bill Hyndman [to name a few]," said Matthews afterward. "To do something like that is very special. I appreciate the opportunity. I was lucky enough to do it."

Sigel, in fact, was the last player to win back-to-back Patterson Cups. Glenn Smeraglio, then of Yardley Country Club, was the last to win consecutive Silver Crosses.

Matthews started the day tied for fourth place following a three-under 69 on his opening round Thursday. The soon-to-be Temple sophomore birdied four of the first seven holes to take the lead after the seventh hole. The DuPont, Pa. native then bogeyed holes eight and nine, to drop back to second place behind Teesdale, but an eagle on the 570-yard, par five 10th hole pushed him back in front. He then coasted home, birdying four of the final eight holes.

Teesdale, who will be entering his junior year in the fall, finished in second place, five under for the tournament. Temple senior Matthew Crescenzo, who started the day atop the leaderboard, finished tied for fourth at three-under par.

Matthews, who will next compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., has posted wins this summer at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier and the Philadelphia Golf Association Open Championship. He also served as an alternate at the U.S. Open Championship held at Merion Golf Club, after shooting a four-under-par 67 in the final round of a sectional qualifier. He had qualified for the Sectional by sinking a birdie putt on the 18th for a round of 76 to place himself in a three-way tie for low score of the day in a local qualifier at the Country Club of SC in Clark Summit, Pa.
