Women's Tennis Gets Fall Season Underway at Cissie Leary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Freshman women's tennis player Anais Nussaume was impressive in her Temple debut, winning two singles matches at the B Flight to stay in the hunt for a title at the 17th annual Cissie Leary Invitational, hosted by Penn on Friday-Sunday, September 20-22. Nussaume was one of six TU players competing at the tournament.
Nussaume earned a bye in the opening round, and defeated Maryland's Olivia Gaudreault in the round of 16, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday to face Tiana Takenaga of Columbia.
Also winning once in singles play were senior Alicia Doms and junior Rebecca Breland. Doms was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Penn State's Marie Bedard in the opening round. The senior dropped her next match to Anastasia Polyakova of St. John's to move to the consolation bracket. Breland picked up a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Yanita Amaudova of St. John's before falling into the consolation bracket after a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Columbia's Crystal Leung.
Yana Mavrina dropped her opening round match to her opponent from Rhode Island, 7-5, 6-3, and moved into consolation play. The senior received a bye in the round of 32 and will face Bowdoin's Tiffany Cheng on Saturday.
Doms, Breland, and Minami Okajima, a loser in her second round match of Flight B after a bye, will all be active in the Flight A&B consolation matches. Carly Bohman, who dropped her opening round match and then fell again in the consolation bracket, will be active in the consolation-consolation bracket.
In doubles play, Breland and Mavrina were successful in the round of 32 after receiving a bye to advance from the first round. The duo defeated Ioana Alecsiu and Vivian Cheng of Columbia, 8-6, to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday.
Also winning on Friday in doubles action were Bohman and Okajima with a 9-7 defeat of Rhode Island's Nithila Asokaraj and Taylor Holden in the round of 64. The pair fell to Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova of Maryland, 8-1, in their next match to move in to consolation play.
Doms and Nussaume dropped an opening round match to a split duo of Brigitte Desnoes (Penn) and Nataliya Naumoa (Delaware), 8-5, before dropping out of the competition with an 8-6 loss to Delaware's Kimberly Milia and Olivia Heim in the second round of consolation play.
Action at the tournament resumes Saturday morning.
