AMBLER, PA - The sophomore tandem of Kelly Farrell and Paige Rachel provided the offense and sophomore goalkeeper Shaunki Kerkhoff stopped all four shots she faced to lead Temple women's soccer to a 2-0 win over Houston in its inaugural American Athletic Conference match Wednesday at the Ambler Soccer Field.
The Owls improved to 6-3-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in The American while Houston fell to 1-3-3, and 0-1-0. The six wins is the most in a season since the 2010 squad ended the season with six victories.
"Today was great for the players and great for Temple University to show we can compete in this conference in all of our sports," said Temple coach Seamus O'Connor. "It is such a relief for the players and justification for all of the work they have been doing. There were a lot of doubters with such a young team but we are growing and growing every game so it was great for them."
Farrell broke up a scoreless match midway through the first half, taking a nice feed from Rachel and finishing it past Cougar goalkeeper Cami Koski (3 saves) in the 23rd minute. The game would remain that way until a scramble in front of Koski put the ball on Rachel's foot and the Owl forward sent it home for an insurance goal in the 87th minute.
Defensively, t was the seventh shutout for Kerkhoff, who lowered her goals against average to a miniscule 0.39 on the season. But it was far from a one-woman show on defense.
"(Defense) is the core strength of our program," said O'Connor. "It is what we build on. We know we can take risks at the other end of the field. We have become a lot more attacking this year because of the strength of our defenders."
The Owls will look to even their home mark and remain unbeaten when they host SMU Sunday at the Ambler Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
