TEMPLE NOTES...
Winning the first three games of the season, the Owls look to remain unbeaten. They currently are off to their best start since starting 5-0 in 1986 under former coach John Boles. They currently are tied for 10th in the Mid-Atlantic region of the National Soccer Coaches Association of American's latest poll and are one of three American Athletic teams (UConn and USF) that are unbeaten.
Goalkeeper Dan Scheck has continued his stellar play from last season into this year. He has three shutouts in three games this year, recording a total of 12 saves. He has a six game regular season shutout streak dating back to last season, a total of 506:34. He was named Goalie of the Week by the American Athletic Conference and Defender of the Week for the Philadelphia Soccer Six for his stellar play this past week. The last time the Owls started the season with three shutouts was in 1980.
Jared Martinelli is already off to a blistering start of the 2013 season. He has four goals and one assist to lead the team, including his first career hat trick in a 3-0 victory over Wofford. He was named Offensive Player of the Week by the American Athletic Conference and Philadelphia Soccer Six this past week.
Vaughn Spurrier scored his first goal of the season against Hofstra. This comes after scoring zero goals last year but having 10 assists.
Ranked as the #20 recruiting class of 2013, the newcomers for the Owls have already made an impact. Seven newcomers have played, with Stefan Mueller and Robert Sagel starting all three games. Sagel has made the biggest impact so far. He scored his first collegiate goal against Hofstra off a header from a corner kick by Martinelli. His goal helped him earn weekly honor roll for the American Athletic Conference.
RIDER NOTES...
After only winning three games last season and losing 17 letterwinners and nine starters, Rider has two victories to start the season unbeaten. They have beaten Robert Morris and Saint Joseph's at home this season.
Christian Flath leads the Broncs in scoring with two goals and two assists. His two goals have come on only three shots. Three other players have scored for the Broncs (Adrien Huss, Warren Holmes and Sonimi Halliday) in a balanced offensive attack.
Jimmy Quilter has started both games for Rider and earned both wins. He has made 17 saves for a .895 save percentage and 1.00 goals allowed average per game.
