PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball fell to Penn, 74-70, in Philadelphia Big 5 action on Wednesday evening at McGonigle Hall.
 
The Owls fell to 10-8 overall and finished 1-3 in the Big 5, while the Quakers improved to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big 5. 
 
In the first half, Temple jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Penn went on an 8-2 run to pull within two, 12-10, and tied the game at 14-14.  The Quakers went ahead by as many as six points, 24-18, and held a four-point advantage at halftime, 30-26. Freshman Taylor Robinson (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Owls with career highs 14 points and nine rebounds in the first half.
 
In the second half, Temple went ahead by seven points, 52-45, but Penn went on a 10-2 run to take over the lead, 55-54 with 9:05 to go. The teams battled back and forth and were tied at 70-70 with 47 seconds left. The Quakers scored the final four points for the win.
 
"Even early on, we had control of the game," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. "When you look at the scoreboards, we didn't take advantage of opportunities."
 
Robinson led the Owls with her first double-double with career highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season (9th of career) with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) came off the bench for 13 points, including three treys. Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) added 10 points.
 
Kara Bonenberger paced Penn with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Sydney Stipanovich added 17 points and 10 boards.
 
"A lot had to do with things on the defensive end, letting them get points in the paint." Cardoza said. "Our defense just wasn't good today."
 
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Penn, 50-38. The Owls shot 39 percent (30-78) from the field, and the Quakers shot 45 percent (29-64).
 
Temple continues its three-game homestand with Rutgers in American Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
