Women's Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at #69 Princeton
1.25.14 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman women's tennis player Anais Nussaume carried her strong play from the fall into the spring season, winning her first match of 2014 at the fifth singles flight. That was the only point the Owls would score, however, as the Temple squad dropped a 6-1 decision at #69 Princeton on Saturday, January 25.
The Tigers got on the board first with the doubles point after wins at the first and third flights. Yana Mavrina and Nussaume helped avoid the sweep with their 7-6(5) victory over Katie Goepel and Emily Hahn at No. 2.
In singles action, Princeton won the first four flights in straight sets. The host team went ahead 2-0 after Hahn took down Jordan Batey, 6-1, 6-1, at the third flight, but Nussaume cut the lead in half with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Joan Cannon at number five. The Tigers won the next three matches at four, one and two, respectively, to secure the victory.
Freshman Dina Karina nearly got the Owls another point with her match at No. 6. The rookie blanked Katherine Flanigan, 6-0, in the opening set before dropping the second, 6-1. The two battled it out in the third set super tiebreaker, but Flanigan eventually got the best of Karina with a 13-11 win.
Temple is 0-1 and will play next on February 5 when it hosts Drexel at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center for an 8 a.m. match. Princeton is 1-0.
