Women's Soccer Falls in Season Finale and Secures #8 Seed in Conference Tournament
10.26.14 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer fell 3-0 to UConn Sunday afternoon in Ambler, Pa for their season finale and senior day honoring senior Alyssa Kirk. Temple drops to 11-7-1 and 3-5-1 in the conference while UConn stands at 11-4-4 and 4-2-3 in the conference.
UConn gained control early in the first half as Lindsey Watkins scored at the 0:41 minute mark. The Huskies scored again shortly after at the 6:01 minute mark. Temple clamped down and held UConn scoreless for the remainder of the half as it ended 2-0. Temple had created opportunities with several quality attempts and had two corner kicks, but couldn't find the net.
During the second half, Temple picked up the tempo and continued to press UConn. Temple was able to get some quality shots, but could not find the net and at the 83:26 minute mark UConn's Riley Houle put in another goal for the Huskies. The score ended 3-0 UConn at the end of regulation. The final shot total was UConn 11 and Temple 8.
"The game was tough," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "Going down two nil was tough, they are just a great team and they exploited us. I thought the girls were phenomenal after that bad start, and the girls just settled down. The wind is such a big influence in the game as well. We had so many quality chances and just couldn't get that final touch in there. I was really pleased how they never quit that is very encouraging, highly paid professional teams would've quit after going down so quickly; but these girls don't do that. These girls wanted to represent Alyssa and Temple University and they didn't quit on either of them."
The Owls will return to action this week for the first round of the American-Athletic Conference Tournament. Temple comes in as the 8th seed and will play SMU the 9th seed on Friday, Oct. 31st at the campus of UCF. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and face #1 seed UCF on Sunday, Nov. 2nd at the campus of UCF. That game is scheduled for a 1:00pm start.
