Women's Basketball Faces Big 5 Opponent Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Saint Joseph's for another Philadelphia Big 5 match-up. The Owls (1-0) and the Hawks (0-1) will square off at 7 p.m. at SJU's Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.
The Owls are coming off a thrilling 75-72 win over La Salle on Friday in the season opener for both teams. Feyonda Fitzgerald poured in 29 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 34 ticks on the clock. The sophomore also added six rebounds and five assists in the win. Junior Erica Covile also scored in double-figures for the Owls, knocking down 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Sophomore Safiya Martin hit career-highs with 11 rebounds and three blocks, while freshmen Tanaya Atkinson (9 pts) and Alliya Butts (8 pts) combined to score 17 in the win.
Fitzgerald was named the Big 5 Women's Player of the Week for her efforts and also earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll.Â
Saint Joseph's fell to #24 Rutgers, 76-52, on Friday after shooting just 31% from the field. The Hawks' Ciara Andrews scored a team-high 19 points while adding six boards and Sarah Fairbanks finished with 16 points, six rebounds and a blocked shot. Natasha Cloud had 10 assists, to go along with six rebounds and three points in the loss.Â
SJU returns eight letterwinners, including four starters, from the 2013-14 team that went 23-10 and advanced to the Second Round of NCAA Tournament. The Hawks' Cloud was selected to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team and Preseason All-Defensive Team, while junior forward Sarah Fairbanks was named to the Preseason All-Conference Third Team. Cloud was also named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the top point guard in the country.
