Comeback Bid Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against Alabama

11.23.14 | Women's Basketball

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Temple women's basketball team couldn't rebound from Alabama's hot second-half start, falling 58-51 to the Crimson Tide in the Hall of Fame Challenge at Allen Field House at KU. The loss slips Temple to 2-3 on the season, while Alabama improves to 4-2, after winning three-straight in the tournament.

The Owls struggled offensively, shooting just 27.1% from the field. Senior Tyonna Williams paced Temple with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals, while freshman Alliya Butts had 10 points and a team-high four steals. Junior Erica Covile added 11 rebounds and nine points.

The teams traded baskets in the first eight minutes of play, with the score tied 8-8 early on. Alabama then scored 10 unanswered points, including a pair of threes to go ahead 18-8 with 9:12 to play in the half.

Temple broke the draught with eight answered, including five from Butts and three from Williams to make it 18-16. The teams traded buckets setting it to 22-20, before a jumper from Butts tied the game at 22-all with 3:49 to play in the half.

A conventional three-point play from Covile gave the Owls their first lead since a 4-2 edge, going up by one point at 27-26 with 1:32 to play. Temple got a few big stops, but Alabama hit a free throw to tie the game at 27-27 at the half.

Covile led the Owls with nine points and seven boards at the break, while Butts had seven points and Fitzgerald, six.

Alabama opened the second half on a 10-2 run, to take a 37-28 lead with 16:25 to play. Temple narrowed the gap to six points, but the Crimson Tide stayed hot from the floor, increasing their lead to 12 on a jumper from Oceana Hamilton to make it 50-37 with 8:42 to play.

Temple's press was effective late in the game, forcing a pair of turnovers and scoring seven-straight to make it a 50-45 game with 4:25 on the clock. Alabama fended off the Owls comeback, however, finishing out the 58-51 win.

The Hall of Fame Challenge Tournament continues a week from today at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. Temple will take on Harvard at 5:00 p.m.
