Women's Basketball Falls to Florida State, 66-62

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team had Florida State on the ropes, but couldn't finish a late comeback, falling 66-62 to the Seminoles on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. FSU, who is receiving votes in both national polls, moves to 9-1 with the win, while Temple falls to 3-7 on the season.
For the Owls, junior Erica Covile recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Tanaya Atkinson shot 63.6% from the field, leading Temple with 16 points, while sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald chipped in with 11 points, five boards, five assists, and three steals. Senior Tyonna Williams rounded out the box score with eight points, three assists, and three steals.
Temple kept up with FSU's fast paced offense, with both teams shooting over 50% in the first eight minutes of play. The Seminoles held an early 10-6 lead but the Owls battled back to tie at 12-12 with a pair of Covile free throws.
FSU moved ahead but the Owls kept the Seminole lead to within two points, until a 7-2 surge by the visitors put them ahead 23-16 with 7:23 to play. Temple closed the gap to just five with a 7-2 run to end the half, which included a three from Covile and a fast break lay-up from Mama Traore off a steal and an assist from Atkinson.
At the break, Covile led the Owls with seven points and four boards, while Fitzgerald had six points and a pair of steals. Florida State was paced by Adut Bulgak and Ivey Slaughter, who each had six points.
Temple opened the second half with back-to-back baskets from Atkinson to close the gap to 29-27 quickly. However, FSU answered with six straight points, to re-open an eight-point edge at 35-27 with 17:28 to play.
Atkinson and Covile then sparked a a 14-7 Temple run that brought the score to 42-41 with 9:50 to play. Atkinson hit a pair of threes during the surge, while Covile had five points, also adding a three.
After the Seminoles' Slaughter hit a jumper, Williams added a pair of free throws to keep pace. Temple then got a steal from Butts and had a chance to take a lead, but the rookie's three point attempt rattled in and out.
Following the Temple miss, Florida State gained some breathing room with a 10-4 run that included four each from Slaughter and Shakayla Thomas, putting the Seminoles up 59-50 with 2:56. Again, the Owls mounted a furious comeback, using an 8-2 run to come within three at 61-58 with under a minute to play. Williams and Robinson each had four points during the surge.
Leading by just three points, FSU appeared to be out of options on its next trip down the court, but Bulgak hit a three from the corner as the shot clock was winding down. The strike put FSU up by six at 64-58 with just 32 seconds on the clock.
A Fitzgerald jumper cut the lead to four with 18 seconds left and then FSU missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Temple some life. On the next possession, Williams was fouled and hit both free throws to cut the lead to 64-62. The Owls were forced to foul again, and this time, FSU's Meagan Conwright hit both free throws, putting the Seminoles up 66-62 with four seconds left. Temple's last ditch three point attempt fell short, closing out the victory for Florida State.
Slaughter finished with a double-double for FSU, scoring 16 points and adding 12 boards, eight of which came on the offensive end. Bulgak added 11 points and six boards, while Brittany Brown had 11 points and seven boards, as Florida State out-rebounded Temple, 44-29.
Temple now begins a stretch of three-straight road games, kicking off the action with a game at Howard on Thursday at 5 p.m.
