12.18.14 | Women's Basketball

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Temple women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid with a 30-point win on the road at Howard on Thursday evening. The Owls moved to 4-7 overall with the 78-48 victory, while Howard dips to 1-10 with the loss.

Freshman Tanaya Atkinson led four Owls in double figures, dropping a game-high 22 points, while also adding 11 boards to wrap up the second double-double of her career. Sophomore Taylor Robinson was effective inside for the Owls, recording a season-high 15 points, while junior Erica Covile had a busy day with 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points, while junior Mama Traore had a season-best nine points and senior Tyonna Williams added a game-high four assists.

The Temple offense clicked early, as Howard had no answer for Robinson's size on the inside. The 6-4 center struck for six early points, while on defense the Temple press was rolling, as the Owls built up a 20-3 lead at the 11:03 mark. Howard rebounded by heating up from three-point range, putting together a 10-4 run that cut the Temple lead to 24-13 with 7:55 to play.

Despite Howard heating up offensively, the Owls' Atkinson helped Temple keep it's lead at double figures through most of remainder of the half. The rookie scored six of Temple's final eight points of the frame, keeping the Owls ahead 36-23 at the break. The freshman had 15 points and seven boards at halftime, while Robinson and Covile had eight each to help bolster the Temple offense.

Temple extended its lead to 42-25 after the first four minutes of the half. Atkinson nailed a three to open the Owls scoring, their first bucket from beyond-the-arc, after going 0-9 from three in the first half. After the Temple surge, Howard scored nine straight, to cut the lead to 42-34 with 14:10 to play.

The Owls responded with a 24-6 run, including eight points from Traore to push the lead to 24 points. The advantage was Temple's largest of the game, at 66-42 with 5:22 to play. Howard was able to match baskets with the Owls over the next two minutes of play, but Temple closed out the game with a 12-2 run, wrapping up the 30-point victory at 78-48.

Temple shot a season-best 44.3% from the field on 27-61, despite only connecting on two of 15 shots from three-point range. The Owls also had a season-best performance on the line, making 22 of 26 free throws, shooting 84.6% from the charity stripe.

The cherry and white are back in action on Monday, heading to Big 5-rival Villanova for an 11:30 a.m. affair.
