Men's Tennis Struggles at UMBC, Falls 7-0
2.1.14 | Men's Tennis
BALTIMORE – The Temple men's tennis team went up against a tough UMBC team on Friday, January 31, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Retrievers. The match was held at 40 West Raquet Club, UMBC's home indoor courts.
Sophomores Hicham Belkssir and Nicolas Paulus started the day off strong, winning their doubles match at number three, 6-0. That was the only victory the Owls would see, however, as the host team shut them out the rest of the way.
Three of TU's singles matches went three sets, but ultimately the UMBC players came out on top each time. Sophomore Santiago Canete won his first set at No. 2, 6-5(3), before Melker Svard rebounded with two 6-3 sets to take the point. Junior Kristian Marquart was also a first set winner at the fourth flight, defeating Eliott Loubatie 6-5(5), but Loubatie responded with a 6-4, 6-3 second and third set, respectively, for the win.
Freshman Filip Stipcic had an exciting match at the sixth flight, going to a super tiebreaker with Biyik Akinshemoyin. The rookie won the opening set 6-5(4), but Akinshemoyin came back to take the second, 6-5(5). The UMBC opponent got the point with a 10-6 super tiebreak win in the third.
The Owls are 0-3 and will return to the court Sunday with a 10 a.m. match at William & Mary.
