Women's Tennis Has Rough Weekend, Dropping Two Matches

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team had a rough weekend on the courts, dropping two matches. The Owls fell to former Atlantic 10 rival Xavier, 5-2, on Saturday before dropping a 4-3 decision to visiting Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday. Both matches were played at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center.
On Saturday, the Musketeers took an early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the second and third flights. The visitors also won the first four singles matches completed to secure the victory early.
Freshmen Anais Nussaume and Dina Karina earned the TU points, picking up wins at the fourth and sixth flights, respectively. Nussaume was a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victor against Daniella Patton at No. 4, and Karina earned a 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-1 decision against Lizzie Oosterbaan at No. 6.
The Owls took an early lead against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, winning the first and third doubles flights for the 1-0 edge. Jordan Batey and Minami Okajima teamed up at No. 1 to win 8-3, before Yana Mavrina and Nussaume won by the same score at No. 3.
After a Karina victory at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, made it a 2-0 Temple lead, the Knights rebounded with wins at the fourth and fifth flights to even the score, 2-2. Batey gave the Owls back the lead with her 6-3, 6-4 win against Gisela Castany at No. 3, but that was the last of the scoring for TU.
The matches were the final home bouts for the Cherry and White until April. The Owls will hit the road to take on Stony Brook at Lehigh on Friday, February 21 at noon, for their next action.
