Dayton Box Score | Western Michigan Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– The Temple softball team split a pair of games on its opening weekend at the TSU Tiger Classic on Friday, February 21. The Owls dropped their opener to Dayton, 3-2, before rebounding with an 11-3 five-inning victory over Western Michigan.

Against Dayton, sophomore Leah Lucas led the team with a 2-for-3 performance. Sarah Prezioso and Julia Kastner were each 2-for-4, while Kelsey Dominik collected the only RBI with a solo homerun.

The Flyers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second. Tiffany Ricks led off the frame with a homerun to left centerfield.

Temple got that run back in the top of the third when Kastner scored on a passed ball. Kastner had led off the frame with a single, before Prezioso doubled to put runners on second and third. One out later, Kastner scored to tie the game, 1-1.

Dayton put two more on the board in the fourth, taking advantage of four hits, including a leadoff double from Ricks. Katie Ryan later delivered another double, driving in Ricks and another Flyer to put her squad ahead 3-1. The Owls got one of those back in the top of the seventh when Dominik delivered her leadoff dinger, but it was too little, too late.

Dominik (0-1) took the loss, going 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, walking two and striking out three. Gabrielle Snyder (1-1) got the win with 6.0 innings of work, giving up eight hits and also walking two and fanning three. Emily Froment picked up the save with 1.0 innings of hitless work.

In the Western Michigan game, the Cherry & White scored early and often, building an 11-0 lead by the fifth inning. Lucas and Kastner both had solid games at the plate, contributing four and three RBI, respectively. Freshman Toni Santos was 3-for-3 in the game.

Amanda Gatt (1-0) impressed in her collegiate debut on the mound, getting the win with four hits in 5.0 innings, walking three and striking out one. Erin Binkowski (1-2) took the loss, allowing the Owls to pound out 14 hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

Temple (1-1) will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Western Michigan again at 5 p.m. EST and Tennessee State at 7 p.m. EST.
