NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kelsey Dominik went 4-for-4 at the plate and picked up the win on the mound as the Temple softball team earned an 8-4 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday, February 22, on the second day of the TSU Tiger Classic. The Owls (2-2) also played the host Tennessee State in a late game that didn't end until after midnight Eastern Time, falling 7-5.
Â
Western Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but TU responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Sarah Prezioso hit a one-out double to right field before Lacey McKeon laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on the throw when the Broncos attempted to throw out Prezioso at third. The first two runs came across when Prezioso and Lacey scored on an error on a ball hit by Stephanie Pasquale. Dominik then stepped in and delivered an RBI single to end the scoring for the inning.
Â
After WMU scored once in the fourth and once again in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, the Owls came back with a five-run sixth to put the game away. The frame featured four hits and two errors, leading to the offensive outburst. Lacey had the only RBI in the inning with a fielder's choice bunt that scored Toni Santos, who had reached on a miscue earlier in the inning.
Â
Wester Michigan threatened in the seventh when Sabrina Gamboa hit a two-out double to right center, but Dominik got out of it with no more damage, inducing a groundout to end the game.
Â
In addition to her perfect performance at the plate, Dominik (1-1) picked up her first win of the season with the complete game effort, allowing nine hits, four runs, walking one and striking out one. Allyson Kus (4-3) took the loss, going 5.2 innings and giving up 12 hits and eight runs.
Â
Prezioso (2-for-4), McKeon (2-for-4) and Kaylyn Zierke (2-for-3) each recorded multiple hits for TU.
Â
The Owls held a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning against Tennessee State, but the home team scored three runs on two hits and a TU error in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-4 lead it would not relinquish. Both teams scored once more in the sixth for the final score of 7-5 in the Tigers' favor.
Â
Pasquale was the only Temple player to record more than one hit in the contest, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Prezioso swiped her first base of the season to give her 44 in her career, and now needs just eight more stolen bases to set a school record.
Â
Olivia Gamache (1-4) picked up the win in 4.0 innings of work, allowing three hits and all four runs while walking four and striking out six. Shea Morris earned her first save of the season. Jessica Mahoney (0-1) took the loss for TU, going 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, five runs, walking two and fanning three.
Â
The Owls (2-2) are back in action Sunday at 12:30 p.m. EST when they face the Sycamores of Indiana State in their final game of the tournament.
