Soccer Standout Vaughn Spurrier Named American Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced that Temple University soccer standout Vaughn Spurrier has been named the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The selection was made by the Conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
A senior from Cleveland, Ohio, Spurrier will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. The Conference also announced the male winners of the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. Each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies.
Spurrier was Temple's second-leading scorer on a team that went 10-4-4 overall and 3-1-4 in the American Athletic Conference in 2013. He scored four goals with three assists for 11 points and had game-winning goals in the Owls' victories against Hofstra and Cincinnati.
A 2013 team captain, Spurrier appeared in 74 games with 66 starts in his career, scoring 11 goals with 17 assists for 39 points in his four years. He ranked eighth nationally in assists in 2012 (10) and finished with at least 10 points in three of his four seasons.
Spurrier, who holds a 3.50 grade-point average as a biophysics major, is a member of Temple's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship Athletes Leadership Committee.
Spurrier serves as a physics and chemistry tutor at Temple's Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes and was a two-year participant in the Minority Access to Research Careers program. His research experience includes terms at Temple University, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in conjunction with the Ohio State University. Spurrier plans to continue his studies in a Ph.D. program in biophysical sciences.
The American Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the conference during the 2013-14 academic year. One male and one female from each of the conference's 10 member institutions may be named as the winners of the conference's Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and a Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Faculty Athletic Representatives at each American Athletic Conference institution, in consultation with the Director of Athletics and appropriate athletic academic advisors, may annually nominate one male candidate for an Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. All nominees must have maintained both excellent academic credentials (minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00) and outstanding athletic performance; must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport; and must have attained a minimum of senior standing, as determined by the respective institution.
