ORLANDO, Fla. –Temple women's basketball opened March with a 64-54 win at UCF in American Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the CFE Arena.
 
The Owls improved to 13-15 overall and 7-10 in the conference, while the Knights fell to 10-18 overall and 3-14 in the league.  The win snapped a four-game losing skid.
 
In the first half, UCF scored the first two buckets en route to a 10-point lead, 12-2.  The teams battled within a five-point margin most of the half with two Temple starters on the bench in foul trouble. The Owls relied on their bench down the stretch, closing the half with a 7-0 run.  Down by four, 27-23, junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) nailed a jumper to bring the Owls within two.  Freshman Safiya Martin (Fayetteville, Ga.) hit the second of two free throws to bring TU within one, 27-26.  Then sophomore Erica Covile (Detroit, Mich.) hit a free throw to tie the game for a 27-27 halftime score.
 
In the second half, Temple took its first lead of the game with a break-up lay-up by freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.). The Owls, who went 0-7 from long range in the first half, nailed three consecutive treys—one from junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) and two from Brown—for a 9-0 run and a six-point lead, 39-33. TU continued to build upon its lead, moving into double digits over the last four minutes, for the road win.
 
Brown paced the Owls with 13 points, including three treys. Sophomore Monaye Merritt (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 12 points.  Fitzgerald finished with 10 points, including shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. 
 
Zykira Lewis was the top Knight with 14 points, while Brittni Montgomery added 12 points.
                                                                                                               
Overall, UCF out-rebounded Temple, 40-37. Both teams shot 37 percent from the field. Temple led in free throw shooting (72 percent).
 
Temple closes the regular season at home on Monday with Houston.  Tip-off at McGonigle Hall is set for 7 p.m.   The Senior Class will be honored in a pregame (6:45 p.m.) ceremony.
