Fitzgerald Named Rookie of the Year; Thames, Shipp, Brown Earn All-Conference Honors

PHILADELPHIA – Temple freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) has been named the 2014 PhillyCollegeSports.com Rookie of the Year, the site announced on Friday.

She shares the honor with Penn's Sydney Stipanovich.

Additionally, Fitzgerald earned second-team All-Division I honors.
Â
Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) was named to the third team, while senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) and junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) earned honorable mention accolades.

The 2014 PhillyCollegeSports.com All-Philly Division I selections were made by Glenn Papazian of PhillyCollegeSports.com and the Women Hoops Guru Mel Greenberg.Â

Fitzgerald, a 5-7 point guard, was team leader all season. She averaged a team-best 12.9 ppg and 4.0 apg. A starter in all 30 games, Fitzgerald was a unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference's All-Freshman Team as well as a second-team All-Conference selection.

Thames, a 6-0 forward, was a four-year starter for the Owls. She finished second in team scoring with 10.3 ppg and was the team's leading rebounder with 7.2 rpg. She holds the school record for most games played (134) and ranks sixth on the career rebounding chart (825). Thames earned second-team All-Conference honors from the American.

Shipp, a 5-10 guard, played in all 30 games in 2013-14 with 23 starts. She averaged 8.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg. A transfer from George Washington, Shipp spent her final season of eligibility with the Owls while pursuing a master's degree.

Brown, a 5-6 guard, played in 24 games off the bench for the Owls this season. She averaged 7.8 ppg and 2.3 rpg in 20.0 mpg. The Owls' top three-point shooter at 35.5 percent, Brown earned the American's Sixth Player of the Year award.
