BALTIMORE - Despite hat tricks from both Kelly Syphard and Jaymie Tabor, the Temple lacrosse team fell 11-9 in a hard-fought game at UMBC on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (3-6) scored the final two goals of the game, but the last draw control went to the Retrievers (4-4) who were able to run out the clock.
It was an evenly-matched contest most of the way with four ties, but a four-goal UMBC run in the second half was enough to keep the Retrievers in the lead for good.
Syphard and Tabor scored three goals apiece to lead Temple, while three players scored three goals each for UMBC.
Two of Tabor's goals came in the first seven minutes as the teams traded scores early and were tied 2-2 with 23:24 left in the first half. After back-to-back UMBC goals, the Owls answered with two of their own from Rachel Schwaab and Nicole Tiernan, tying the game again at 4-4 with just under five minutes left in the half.
Momentum shifted to UMBC over the last few minutes, as the Retrievers closed the first half on a three-goal run including two in the final 18 seconds for a 7-4 halftime lead.
The Owls didn't stay down for long, opening the second half with a three-goal run of their own. Morgan Glassford passed to Lea Britton for the first, while Kathryn Skahan assisted on Syphard's first goal of the game less than two minutes later. Not even a minute after that goal, Tabor took advantage of a free-position shot to complete her hat trick and tie the game at 7-7.
It would be nearly 20 minutes until Temple was able to get on the board again. UMBC rattled off four goals over the next 14 minutes as the Owls struggled with turnovers.
Finally, just under the four-minute mark, Syphard connected with Glassford to score her second goal of the game. Megan Tiernan controlled the next draw, and the Owls maintained possession until Syphard scored her third goal with 2:12 remaining on a man-up, free-position opportunity.
After leading 15-6 in draw controls to that point, Temple could not corral the last draw of the game. UMBC picked it up and was able to maintain possession and keep the Owls from getting closer than two.
Temple now begins BIG EAST play, and will host UConn on Saturday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m.
