Women's Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Temple women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at American Athletic Conference rival Rutgers on Friday afternoon. The Owls fall to 5-10 overall on the year, while Rutgers improves to 10-4.
The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins at the first and third doubles flights.
The host team didn't stop there, building a 4-0 lead and securing the match with wins at the second, third and fifth flights. Alicia Doms came close to getting TU its first point, forcing Vanessa Petrini to three sets at the first flight. The senior ultimately dropped the match, however, losing 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-2.
Dina Karina also came close to getting the Owls on the board, winning the first set 7-5. Stefanie Balasa responded with wins in the final two sets though, 6-4, 11-9, to get the come from behind win.
Minami Okajima was TU's lone point winner, defeating Farris Cunningham at the sixth flight. Cunningham took the opening set, 6-4, before Okajima won 6-2 in the second. The two played the third set to a 5-5 tie before Okajima earned the tiebreaker win 7-4.
Temple will return to the court tomorrow with a 12 p.m. match at UConn.
