Four Women Gymnasts Named to Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Team

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's gymnasts Sylvie Borschel, Lauren Capone, Brittanie DeMeno, and Heather Zaniewski were selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer At-Large Academic All-Area Team. The team consists of 11 student-athletes and was voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Temple fencer Chantal Montrose joined the four gymnasts to give Temple the highest number of student-athletes to make the All-Area squad in the women's at-large category.
Borschel is a senior majoring in film and media arts with a 3.65 GPA. She was outstanding on the balance beam all year for Temple, with an RQS of 9.75 that ranked her third in the ECAC. She set her season high of 9.825 at William and Mary.
DeMeno is a senior majoring in childhood education with a 3.73 GPA. She ended the regular season tied for ninth on vault in ECAC with a RQS of 9.680. DeMeno set her season high of 9.75 in a quad-meet at Eastern Michigan, and scored at least 9.7 on vault in three other meets, including the ECAC Championships
Zaniewski is senior majoring in neuroscience with a 3.62 GPA. She had season highs of 9.6 on the balance beam and 9.75 on bars. She earned a 9.7 on bars and 9.6 on balance beam to help lead the Owls to victory in the Ken Anderson Memorial Meet.
Capone is the only non-senior for Temple selected to the team. The junior is majoring in strategic communications and has a GPA of 3.55. Capone has served as a vault and floor specialist all season and was named First Team USAG All-American on vault this past weekend at the USAG Championships. She placed third on floor at ECAC Championships with a score of 9.725. Capone ended the regular season with a RQS of 9.675 on floor. She set her career highs in vault (9.825) and floor (9.8) in the last meet of the regular season at William and Mary. She has scored at least 9.5 on vault and 9.6 on floor in seven straight meets.
