PHILADELPHIA - The final three regular season games for Temple lacrosse are all BIG EAST contests, and will all be played on the road. This week the Owls head to Marquette for a 4:00 p.m. (EST) game on Thursday, April 17, and will play at Georgetown on Saturday, April 19. The Georgetown game time was recently changed from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Owls, at 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST Conference, are currently tied for fourth place with Villanova. If that tie stood, Temple would have the tiebreaker by virtue of defeating the Wildcats. Four teams will advance to the BIG EAST Championships, which will be hosted by Georgetown May 1 and 3.
Temple is coming off a decisive, 19-3 win over Cincinnati in which 14 different players scored for the Owls. In their other game last week, the Owls suffered a loss to #19 and league-leading Louisville. Senior Jaymie Tabor is Temple's scoring leader overall with 26 goals, while sophomore Nicole Tiernan has come on strong in conference play and leads Temple with 11 goals in BIG EAST games. Sophomore Maddie McTigue is Temple's leader in draw controls with 31, and graduate Nina Falcone is the leader in caused turnovers with 11.
For her efforts last week, Tiernan was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She scored six goals, including four of Temple's six goals against #19 Louisville. She scored twice more in the Owls' rout of Cincinnati, converted on 2-of-3 free-position attempts, and caused three turnovers.
Marquette is also 5-8 overall, and the Golden Eagles are 1-3 in league play. They defeated Cincinnati in the BIG EAST opener but have since lost three straight, including a narrow, 11-10 decision at UConn in their most recent game. Sophomore Hayley Baas leads Marquette in scoring with 23 goals, while sophomore Claire Costanza and freshman Amanda Bochniak are team leaders in points with 34 and 33, respectively. Both have recorded a team-best 17 assists.
Georgetown was ranked in the IWLCA Top 20 until recently, but the Hoyas are still receiving votes in the poll. They were picked by the BIG EAST coaches as the preseason favorite, but lost a narrow, 14-13 contest to current league leader Louisville. Overall, the Hoyas are 6-7, and they stand in second in the BIG EAST at 3-1. Seven Georgetown players have reached double figures in goal-scoring, led by senior Kelyn Freedman with 29 goals.
