Zierke’s 3-for-4 Performance Highlights Softball’s 3-2 Comeback Win at UConn

4.19.14 | Softball

STORRS, Conn. – Freshman Kaylyn Zierke went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Temple softball team to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at UConn on Saturday, April 19. The game was the final in a three-game series between the American Athletic Conference foes, with the Owls (15-20, 5-7 AAC) winning two of three.

The host Huskies (11-31, 3-11 AAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with both of those runs coming in the second. Audrey Ambler drew a walk before Heather Fyfe took a 3-1 pitch for a ride over the left field fence for the early lead.

Neither team could get the offense clicking over the next three innings. The Huskies got a hit in each of the frames, but could not produce. The Owls stranded five on the bases during that time, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

TU finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Kelsey Dominik and Zierke started the inning with back-to-back singles to get two runners on. UConn got the next two out, but Julia Kastner stepped in and doubled to left field to drive in two runs and tie the game at 2-2.

UConn got the lead runner on in the bottom of the frame, but two groundouts and a strikeout sent it to the seventh still knotted at 2-2. With one out, Toni Santos hit her first career triple down the right field line. Two batters later, Zierke delivered the timely double to left field to score Santos and give the Cherry & White a 3-2 lead.

With one out in the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies drew a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. Owls' pitcher Dominik induced a groundout to shortstop on the next batter, and closed out the comeback with a strikeout for the final out and the win.

Dominik (9-8) gave up just four hits in 7.0 innings of work, fanning seven and walking four. Lauren Duggan (8-18) took the loss in the complete-game effort, giving up nine hits, walking four and striking out six.

In addition to Zierke (3-for-4), Santos also had multiple hits in a 2-for-4 showing.

Temple will return to action with a pair of non-conference games at Stony Brook on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
