Softball Falls Twice at Stony Brook; Loses 8-0 in Opener and Drops Nightcap 2-1

4.23.14 | Softball

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Temple softball headed to Stony Brook on Wednesday, April 23, dropping a pair of games to the Seawolves, 8-0 and 2-1. TU falls to 15-22, while SBU improves to 26-14.

Stony Brook scored early and often in the opener, and the solid pitching from Allison Cukrov limited the Owls to just two hits, as the host team rolled to a six-inning 8-0 victory. The Seawolves built a 6-0 lead through the first four innings and Cukrov carried a no-hitter into the sixth.

Sarah Prezioso finally broke the TU offensive drought with a leadoff single to left field before stealing second. One out later, Leah Lucas singled to put runners on the corners. Kaylyn Zierke then walked to load the bases, but the Owls could not produce.

Temple was not without its opportunities, stranding six runners throughout the game as Cukrov (18-7) issued three walks to go with four strikeouts and two hits in 6.0 innings. Kelsey Dominik (9-9) took the loss in 5.1 innings of work, giving up nine hits, walking two and fanning two.

The Cherry & White struck first in the nightcap, going ahead 1-0 in the top of the second. With two outs, Devynne Nelons hit a homerun over the centerfield fence to give her squad the lead.

The Seawolves regained the lead in the third, taking advantage of a triple and two doubles to score twice and go up 2-1. That would be all the host team would need as both teams were shutdown offensively the rest of the way.

Nelons (2-for-3) and Julia Kastner (2-for-2) were the only Temple players with multiple hits.

TU pitcher Amanda Gatt (4-4) scattered six hits through 6.0 innings, walking one and striking out five. Jane Sallen (9-7) got the win in 7.0 innings of work, giving up six hits, walking one and fanning 10.

Temple returns to the field on Saturday with a conference matchup at Louisville. The doubleheader will begin with game one at 12 p.m.
