Softball Drops 14-6 and 5-0 Games at Louisville

4.26.14 | Softball

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Temple softball team traveled to Louisville this weekend for three games against the Cardinals. The Owls dropped both contests in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, falling 14-6 in the opener before losing 5-0 in the nightcap.

The host Cards used a big second inning in game one, scoring six runs on five hits, including two two-run doubles in the frame.

TU got one of those back in the third when Devynne Nelons homered over the left centerfield fence, but Louisville added three more in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 9-1 contest.

The Owls refused to quit and used a three run, five hit fourth to cut it to 9-4. All three of those runs came on Annie Marcopolus's blast over the left centerfield wall.

But the home squad again responded, scoring four more in the bottom of the fourth. Despite two more runs from the Owls in the top of the fifth, the deficit was too much to overcome. Louisville ended the game by run-rule with a single run in the fifth.

TU pounded out 10 hits in the game, including 2-for-3 performances from both Nelons and Kaylyn Zierke. Sarah Prezioso was 2-for-4.

Kelsey Dominik (9-10) lasted just 2.0 innings in the loss, giving up seven hits and seven runs while walking three.

The Cherry & White offense went quiet in the nightcap as Carallsa Connell (8-5) allowed just two hits while striking out 12 Temple batters.

Louisville, in the meantime, built a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second and two runs in the third. And that would be all the Cards offense would need, letting Connell take care of the rest.

Brooklin White and Toni Santos collected Temple's hits, both going 1-for-2.

Amanda Gatt (4-5) took the loss, going 6.0 innings, surrendering nine hits, walking two and striking out two.
Temple is 15-23, 5-9 in The American. TU and Louisville will finish the series with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
