PALM HARBOR, FL - Temple knew it would have to be at its best to be in the mix at the 2014 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships which features five teams currently ranked in the Top 50. The Owls clearly were not up to the challenge as Temple sits in ninth place after day one of the three-day event being held at the par-71, 7,125-yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Beach Resort and Golf Club Sunday.
"Little disappointed," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn in summing up the Owls' performance. "Everyone probably gave away a few more (strokes) than they needed to today. Conditions got a little windy towards the end so it got a little tougher for Brandon (Matthews), Matt (Crezcenzo) and Matt (Teesdale) coming down the stretch."
Matthews, one of the top golfers in the conference, led the Owls and tied for 13th overall with a two-over 73. The sophomore was among the top five golfers until shooting three over for his final four holes.
Teesdale was one stroke behind Matthews, carding a three-over 74 courtesy of a 30-foot birdy putt on his final hole of the day. He finished tied for 18th overall.
Crescenzo, the senior captain, turned in a six-over 77, tying for 38th out of 50 golfers.
Temple's final two golfers, freshman Evan Notaro and junior Mike Amole, placed 47th and 50th with scores of 81 and 85.
UCF, ranked seventh nationally, leads the field with a one-under 283. SMU, ranked #31, is four strokes back (287) while USF, #30, is in third with a 290. Temple is 22 shots off the pace with a 305.
The Knights' #5 golfer, junior Linus Vaisanen, tops all players with a four-under 67. No other golfer was under 70 for the day.
The Owls tee off Monday at 8:20 am.
