MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Temple softball team split a pair of games at Memphis on Saturday, April 5, defeating the Tigers 1-0 in the opener before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
The opener was a pitchers duel between Kelsey Dominik and Ellen Roberts with both hurlers carrying no-hitters into the fourth inning. Both also gave up a single hit in their half of that frame, but it was Temple's that proved more damaging as Prezioso sent a ball deep over the left centerfield fence as the leadoff batter to give TU a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers threatened again in their half of the sixth. With two out, Lindsay Crowdus drew a walk and Wheeler Hill followed with a single to left field, but Dominik got Brittany Vaughn to foul out to get out of the jam.
With Temple clinging to the 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, the number four Memphis hitter, Calli Irvin, led off the inning with a double to left field. Dominik induced two-straight popups to get the first two outs out of the way, but then issued a walk to pinch hitter Haleigh Ross to put two runners on. The pitcher again got out of it, though, getting a groundout back to the mound for the final out.
Dominik improves to 6-6 with her 11th complete game and third shutout of the season, allowing just three hits and walking two. Roberts (8-12) was the tough-luck loser, giving up just the one hit, fanning six and walking one.
With her homerun, Prezioso (1-for-3) tied the Temple career record for runs scored with her 157th.
The Owls wasted little time getting on the board in the second game when Prezioso broke the school record for career runs scored, coming across on a two-base error by the Memphis defense. Prezioso had reached by way of leadoff walk, and it was Leah Lucas's ball to centerfield that allowed her to score.
Memphis would not be held scoreless two games in a row, and the Tigers opened up a 3-1 lead with a productive second inning. The host team got a three-run blast from Georganna Goodwin after back-to-back singles to open the frame.
Neither team could put together any more offensive power until the fifth inning when Memphis scored again with two outs. Irvin walked and Kelly Braman singled before Ross delivered an RBI single to centerfield to make it 4-1 in favor of the home team.
The TU bats had been mostly silenced since the second inning, but that changed in the top of the sixth. Lucas led off with a double to left field and Dominik followed with a walk. Two outs later, Devynne Nelons hit a 3-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to tie the game at 4-4 with one swing of the bat.
Memphis got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and an RBI single. After Temple starter Amanda Gatt walked the leadoff batter, Dominik came on in relief. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner up and another walk put two runners on. The Owls got the second out on the next batter, but both runners advanced and a wild pitch led to the first score of the inning. Brittany Vaughn then singled up the middle to bring another run in and make it 6-4 for the Tigers.
The top of the seventh started interestingly with relief pitcher Jordan Richwood coming on in place of starter Christian Novak. Richwood promptly hit leadoff batter Toni Santos and walked Prezioso, leading to another pitching change without an out recorded. Roberts replaced Richwood, and quickly got a strikeout and two fly outs to end the game and earn the save.
Novak (7-7) went 6.0 innings, surrendering four hits, four runs (three earned), striking out eight and walking four. Gatt (3-3) lasted 5.0 innings, giving up nine hits, five runs and two walks.
Temple is 10-16 overall, 1-4 in The American. TU and Memphis will finish up the series with a single game tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
