Lapchick to Speak to Temple Student-Athletes

PHILADELPHIA – Dr. Richard E. Lapchick, the human rights activist, pioneer for racial equality, and internationally recognized expert on sports issues, will speak to more than 500 student-athletes at Temple University this weekend as a part of the Owls Striving for Excellence program.
He will discuss "The Healing Power of Sport".
"We are excited that Dr. Richard Lapchick will be here to spend some time with our student-athletes," said Sherryta Freeman, Senior Associate AD of Compliance and Student-Athlete Affairs. "Dr. Lapchick is an internationally recognized expert on sport issues and has appeared numerous times on Good Morning America, Face The Nation, ESPN, and ABC World News."
The Endowed Chair and Director of UCF's DeVos Sports Business Management Program, Dr. Lapchick is often described as "the racial conscience of sport." He brought his commitment to equality and his belief that sport can be an effective instrument of positive social change to the University of Central Florida, where he accepted an endowed chair in August 2001. Lapchick became the only person named as "One of the 100 Most Powerful People in Sport" to head up a sport management program. He remains president and CEO of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport (NCAS) and helped bring the NCAS national office to UCF.
Dr. Lapchick is the son of Joe Lapchick, the famous Original Celtic center who became a legendary coach for St. John's and the Knicks. He is married to Ann Pasnak and has three children and three grandchildren.
